Flute Day 2008
Featuring Dr. Christine E. Beard, flute professor at University of Nebraska-Omaha
Described by critics as “masterful” and “evocative,” flutist Christine Erlander
Beard is constantly in demand as a soloist, chamber artist, and clinician. Quickly
achieving international recognition as a performer and advocate for the piccolo, she
has performed extensively across the U.S. and abroad, including Austria, Ireland, England,
France, Lithuania, Latvia, Norway, and Russia. She has appeared on the program at four of
the previous six conventions of the National Flute Association (2002, 2005, 2006, 2007),
and in 2006 was invited to be the featured piccolo soloist at the International Vintage Brass
Band Festival. Recent activities include hosting and serving as an Artist-Teacher at the 1st annual
International Piccolo Symposium (August 2007). Upcoming engagements include piccolo clinics in
South Carolina (November 2007); appearing as the featured guest artist at the St. Louis Flute
Society Flute Festival (April 2008); and conducting piccolo clinics at the British Flute Society
International Convention in Manchester, England (August 2008).
Dr. Beard earned her MM and DMA in flute performance from The University of Texas at Austin
(1998, 2003) where she was a student of Karl F. Kraber. She joined the faculty at the
University of Nebraska at Omaha in 2002 where she teaches applied flute, chamber music, and
serves as Coordinator of Woodwind Studies. In 2003, she co-founded the Nebraska Flute Club
and continues to serve on its Board of Directors, and also established the Heartland
Community Flute Choir in Omaha which has since been selected to perform at two NMEA conferences.
